This seemingly fragile Russian gymnast would have won even more honours if she had not been a contemporary of Larissa Latynina. At Tokyo, she finished only 0.033pt behind Latynina in an event won by Vera Caslávská (CZE). On the assymetrical bars Caslavska seemed likely to finish first but missed a pirouette off the top bar and fell, thus allowing Astakhova to take her second individual gold medal in that event.
