When the newly formed Guam NOC was looking for a competitor at the 1988 Winter Olympics, Bankert, who was living in Guam at the time, offered to learn cross-country skiing. He then moved to Washington state and trained in Montana with the US Biathlon team. He carried the Guam flag at the opening ceremony in Calgary, and did not come last in his one event.
