A real Cosmopolitan. He was born in Ceylon, returned to England in 1904, served in the Navy and fought for the South African Scots regiment in France, and with the Cossacks in the Russian steppes. After the Olympics, he served for Britain in East Africa, Ethiopia, Sudan, and Yemen. He took part in expeditions in the Himalayas, Lybia and Greenland, and died in Dubai.
