The best competitor of the Winter Olympics probably came closest of anyone to three consecutive golds. In no less than four events did he win two gold medals, and in three of them he added a silver. In the relay before his home crowd in Lillehammer, he lost the sprint against Sylvio Fauner and the gold by 0.4 seconds.  In the combined pursuit at Nagano he started with a 46 second advantage over Thomas Alsgaard, his neighbour (they live only 200 meters apart in the same street in Nannestad). Halfway through the race Alsgaard had caught up and they continued to the line where Dählie lost the sprint by just one second. The next day, Alsgaard helped Dæhlie to a record seventh gold, by taking revenge on the Italians in the 4 x 10 km, beating them again in a sprint. Dählie had had a great hand in this victory, by catching the Italians in the third leg, but handing over to Alsgaard behind them. Alsgaard followed the Italian for the whole 10 km.
The long free-style event was held over just 30 km in 1994, but then too Dæhlie was beaten by Thomas Alsgaard.

When Ludvik Danek broke Al Oerter's world record by a metre and a half, just before the Tokyo Games, no one doubted this would only but spur the already double champion to even greater heights. It did. Before Mexico, Danek lost the world record to Jay Silvester, who was then favourite. Both lost to the reemerging Al Oerter however. At München, Danek finally secured the top spot on the podium.

A colourful personality inside the sport and out, he set seven world records between 1907 and 1911.
Perhaps his greatest contribution to the sport was the way he influenced swimmers with his use of the crawl.
He is listed in some sources as coming fourth in the 100 yds back-stroke in 1904, but that is a mistake.
