He was denied another gold in 1972. He had finished only fifth in the trials but was present at München as member of the Relay team. However, John Smith injured himself in the individual 400m, and Vince Matthews and Wayne Collett were barred from further competing after staging a "mild" protest at the ceremony for the 400m. As the Americans had had to name only six runners for the relay team, that meant they could no longer compete for the gold they would certainly have won.
