When learning of a discus event at Athens, he had a replica made of the ancient discus, which weighed 5kg. He was amazed to find the actual discus used weighed only 2kg.
At Paris, he threw the discus three times into the audience.
There is some discussion as to his place in the High Jump, but I am sticking with Mallon who has him equal second.
(*) He also helped the USA to second or third place in the tug-of-war in 1900, but this medal is disputed, as it appears that spectators helped the American team. Apparently the Americans only competed hors-concours against the winners, since they could not free themselves from the Discus competition, which was conducted at the same time.
The Hellene Olympic Federation has an excellent site on the Athina Olympics, which includes a picture of Robert Garrett.
