Olympic Competitor nr 240
He was the subject of an article in the Journal of Olympic History (vol 29, nr 1,
2021).
He is listed as German, as that was how he had registered himself for the Games.
However, he was born in the Austrian Empire, and served in the Austrian Army.
In 1889 he settled in Athens as the representative of a bicycle company
from Dresden. He stayed in Greece until 1916, when all Germans and Austrians
were expelled. He returned to his native Fulnek. That city became part of
Czechoslovakia in 1920, and of Germany (Sudetenland) in 1937, so he did end his
life (in 1942) as a German.
According to the nephew rule, we should class this Austrian as "German".
