The only woman to have won three individual titles in World record times. She first got her name in the world record book by equalling Dawn Fraser's long-standing mark in the 100 metres freestyle. By december of the same year, she held all freestyle world records up to 1500 metres. By the München Games, Miss Gould was so regarded by the American swimmers that they wore T-shirts stating 'all that glitters is not Gould'. She tried to win five individual titles, but failed narrowly on the 100 and 800 metres. She retired (or turned professional) after the München Games, at the tender age of 16.
