He qualified for the Olympics in 1988, but his horse had to go into quarantine. When he then qualified for the 2008 Olympics (the equestrian events being held in Hong Kong) he became the first Olympian with a 44-year long career. He then bettered that record in London.
Competing at the age of 71, he was the third oldest Olympic competitor, after Oscar Swahn and Arthur von Pongracz.
