In 1967, she failed a gender verification test, and she was stripped of her world records, but she was allowed to keep her medals. She was banned from racing, though, and would not compete thereafter. Later it was shown that she had a genetic abnormality. This led to the rules being changed and she would now be allowed to compete as a female.
