Ukrainian-language Wikipedia has a comprehensive article about this athlete. He was the son of a Ukrainian in the Soviet military, stationed in Turkmenistan at the time of Yuriy's birth. Stationed in Toshkent, Uzbekistan, later, that is where Yuriy learnt his horsemanship. By 1988 he was back in Kyiv however, and Ukraine is where he spent the rest of his life, training Ukrainian equestianists, including his own grandson. Yuriy himself represented Ukraine at the World equestrian games of 2002 and 2006. He should be classed Ukrainian without doubt.
