Eight members of the Smyrna team were descendants of Charlton Whittal, who had moved from Liverpool to Smyrna in 1809. The family stayed in Smyrna when it was renamed İzmir after 1922. Percy (whose mother was Edith Whittal) died in 1914 (in Russian-occupied Persia) and should be deemed Turkish like the rest of his family.
