At nineteen he set a world javelin record of 49.31 m in 1899, then broke it nine times to push it to 62.32 m in 1912. In 1900, there was no javelin competition yet, but he went to Paris anyway and competed (rather successfully) at High Jump and Pole Vault.
He also won the first olympic appearance of javelin, at Athina in 1906, and got bronze at a pentathlon there.
