In the 800 m at St.Louis, it is said he watched the field like a hawk does a chicken, before running wide round the others over the second lap and finally taking the lead in the last 30 metres.
His win in the steeple chase was in the first time he had ever run the event.

He represented the Chicago Athletic Association in the 1904 Club championship.
