At Los Angeles, in the 100 m, there was no way to distinguish between the top 2. Nowadays, both runners would have received a gold medal, but back then the judges had to make a decision. It went against Metcalfe. Then in the 200 m, Metcalfe's blocks were inexplicably set a few meters too far back. After the race, when the error was seen, Metcalfe was offered a re-run. But since Americans had won all three medals, Metcalfe declined. After all, he was young and would get a new chance at Berlin. There he came up against Jesse Owens however, and so Metcalfe would never win an individual gold medal.
