During the long journey from New Zealand to Amsterdam, he had put on too mch weight to fight in his normal Lightweight class. Consequently, he was much lighter than all his opponents. He also had one dislocated knuckle in his left fist, and for a left-hander, that was a severe handicap. He threw most punches with his right hand and fought himself all the way to the gold medal.

Since he was born in Turkmenistan and learnt his sport there, there is no reason not to class this athlete as Turkmen. Krasnovodsk was (and still is to a lesser extent) a predominantly Russian ethnic city. I have reverted to the Russian spelling of his name, rather than the Ukrainian one (Volodymyr) which has become common because he competed for Kyiv later in his career.
