Born in Poland but growing up in East Germany, he continually had problems with the East German authorities. His grandmother lived in Stuttgart and while at the 1982 World Championships in München, he decided to visit her. He returned to the East German team but he was closely watched and he was not given the house that he was promised after his two medals. In 1989 he was allowed to visit his grandmother again, and he decided not to return to East Germany. He took up his gloves again and won the West German championship, after which the West German press also ganged up on him. After reunification he returned to his home town of Schwerin.
