He continued the great tradition of Irish Hammer Trowers of John Flanagan, Matthew McGrath and Pat Ryan, but he was able to do so without taking up American citizenship. Sadly, this prevented him from going for a third title at Berlin, because the Irish federation was at that time not affiliated to IAAF. That he could have won a third title proves his throw of 59.56m in 1937, 1.78m further than the world record, but not officially recognised for the same reasons.
