Her Pentathlon victory brought her her eight world record in the event. In her strongest event, the hurdles, she also set six world records. There was no Pentathlon yet in Roma.
Both Press sisters were born in the Ukraine, from Jewish parents, who had fled from the German occupation. Their mother brought them to Samarqand, Uzbekistan, where they started athletics. Irina moved to Moskva, and stayed in Russia after her sporting career. I shall call them Russian.
