In 1964, aged 17, he had already ran a sub-four minute mile, but he did not
progress through the semifinal. In 1968, he was world record holder at 1500 m,
but he was beaten in the final by Kip Keino.
In 1972, his world record from 1967 was still standing, but he fell in the
heats.
He would serve in the US House of Representatives from 1996 to 2007.
