Spitz's comparative failure at Mexico (two relay golds) brought him almost as much publicity as his seven gold medals at München.
Best known for his performances at 100 and 200 metres freestyle and butterfly, he also broke the 400 metres world record three times and came within 0.4 sec of the 1500 metres world record in 1966.
A poster of Spitz, wearing his Olympic medals, brought him 10000 $ and 15cts on every one sold. He thus became a professional but when this was no longer important to the IOC, he tried to qualify for the 1988 Olympics.
