He began shooting on his family's Montana ranch. After another break, he qualified for the US team for 1980. His daughter Geena-Lynn  finished 10th in the air rifle in 1988.

He could have represented Australia or Belgium, but he chose Great Britain.
When he won the team pursuit at Beijing, he became only the second cyclist to win six medals - after Burton Downing in 1904.
In 2012 he won the Tour de France, the third Olympic Champion to do so, after Miguel Indurain and Jan Ullrich
