Regions of Moldova

The country now known as Moldova was a part of the Ottoman Empire and known as Bessarabia. In 1812 it was annexed by the Russian Empire.
Briefly independent in 1918, it merged with Romania (Romanian and Moldavian are considered by some the same language).
After WWII, Moldavia became part of the Soviet Union.
Moldova achieved independence in 1991.
