The territory of the country now known as Nigeria was British since 1900, when two
British Protectorates were declared over the territories previously administered
by the Royal Niger Company. The protectorates of Northern Nigeria and Southern
Nigeria were united in 1914 into the Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria.
On 1 October 1960 the colony became an independent republic.
One athlete from Nigeria was present at the 1948
London Olympics, representing Great Britain.
The Colony of Nigeria sent teams to the 1952, 1956
and 1960 Olympics. From 1964 there were teams from independent Nigeria.
