Regions of Slovenia

The country now known as Slovenia formed part of Austria since 1816. From 1849 it was contained within two Crown Lands: the duchy of Carniola and the Austrian Littoral.

Carniola

Carniola was a Duchy belonging to Austria from 1849 to 1918. After WWI it became part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, later called Yugoslavia. It formed part of the federal republic of Slovenia, which became independent in 1991.

Inner Carniola

Part of Carniola was awarded to the Kingdom of Italy by the Treaty of Rapallo (1920).

Littoral Austria

The Austrian Littoral was awarded to the Kingdom of Italy by the Treaty of Rapallo (1920). Part of that territory currently belongs to Slovenia (other parts are in Croatia).

Trieste Zone B

The area around Izola and Piran formed part of the Austrian Littoral since 1849. After 1918 it became part of the Kingdom of Italy. After WWII the region was temporarily housed in the Free Territory of Trieste, which was definitively split between Italy and Yugoslavia in 1954. The Zone "B" of this Territory became Yugoslavian and was made part of the federal republic of Slovenia, which became independent in 1991.

An important part of the inhabitants of this region were ethnic Italians. After 1954, many of them left the area and resettled in Italy. In 2002, only 4% of the population spoke Italian. The ethnic Italians should be classed under Italian nationality.
