Region of Sri Lanka

The territory of the country now known as Sri Lanka was British since 1796, when the British occupied the Dutch settlements on the island they called Ceylon. The last indigenous state, the Kingdom of Kandy, was defeated in 1815.
On 4 February 1948 the colony became an independent dominion. In 1972 this became a republic, which adopted the name Sri Lanka.
The colony of Ceylon did not send teams to the pre-war Olympics, but there were two athletes from the island on the Indian teams of Paris 1924 and 1928.
The Dominion of Ceylon sent teams from 1948 onwards.
From 1972 the NOC was called Sri Lanka.
