At Amsterdam, he stopped in his race to allow some ducks to cross, but he still won.
He completely dominated his sport at his time and sometimes coached his opponents as they raced against him. He won the British Empire title, against Jack Beresford, in Hamilton Ontario in 1930 and became a Canadian citizen. He held his Australian qualification for Olympic purposes and returned to Los Angeles to retain his title. He then turned professional, and retired undefeated at the start of the war.
