Davis, a talented all-rounder at school, did not turn to the 400-metres hurdles until April 1956 but in two months he had cut the world record by 0.9 sec down to 49.5. His last race was the third stage for the American 4x400 metres relay team at Roma, which he ran in 45.4 seec - a vital contribution as his team set a world record of 3'02.2.
He later became a professional American footballer.
