He is considered Italy's first medal winner, although this was at Athina in 1906, where he won two silvers at the combined (a pentathlon and a hexathlon)
He won the individual gold medal at London, and then went to work as an acrobat in a circus. He returned to Stockholm but was not considered a professional. He successfully defended his individual title.
